All purpose white bread

I have one tried and true white bread recipe that I call on for all of our holiday baking, calzones, pizza crusts, cheesy bread, bread rolls and sticks, and sandwich bread.  As I think of them, I will list the different applications you can use this bread for, and the baking instructions.  But it all comes together the same way:

Ingredients:

  • 2c warm water
  • 2tb yeast
  • 2tb honey or sugar
  • 1/4c vegetable oil
  • 2 ts salt
  • 5-6 cups white bread flour

Method:

  1. Combine the warm water, yeast and honey or sugar. Let these sit together to ‘foam’ or ‘proof’. The sugar will feed the yeast and make it start foaming in the water.  This is what gives your bread its rise.  If your yeast does not foam, your yeast may be too old.
  2. Add vegetable oil, flour (start with 5 cups) and salt.  Begin mixing until the flour is well mixed in.  The dough should be able to form a ball. Continue adding flour until the dough is no longer so sticky that it sticks to your fingers.  If you are using an electric mixer, the dough should have cleaned the sides of the bowl.
  3. Knead about 10 minutes after your dough is easy to handle, if you are using a mixer you can reduce this time to 5 minutes.   Then let it sit in a greased bowl, covered, until it has doubled in size.  In a warm kitchen this may be as quick as half hour or so.
  4. Punch down the dough and form how you want them.  Then, bake according to the following applications:
